← Artificial Intelligence at SUNY Plattsburgh
Artificial intelligence can support teaching, learning, research, and administrative work, but the person using it remains responsible for protecting university information, reviewing its output, and following applicable policies.
Institutional access is not blanket approval for all data. Even when an AI service is provided by SUNY Plattsburgh, do not enter Protected Information unless ITS has reviewed and approved the specific use.
Use your campus account
When SUNY Plattsburgh provides an institutional account for an AI service, use your @plattsburgh.edu account for university work. A personal account may not have the same contractual protections, administrative controls, or campus settings.
Protect privacy and university information
- Do not enter personal, sensitive, confidential, regulated, or otherwise protected university information unless the specific use has been approved.
- Share only the minimum information needed for an approved task.
- Do not assume that removing a name makes a record safe to enter; other details may still identify a person.
- If you are unsure about the data or service, stop and request guidance from ITS.
Be transparent
Follow applicable requirements for citation, attribution, or disclosure when AI contributes to academic work, research, communications, or other university activities. Requirements may differ by course, assignment, discipline, publication, or work product.
Follow academic requirements
Instructors determine the permitted level of AI use for their courses and assignments. Students must follow the syllabus, assignment directions, and academic honesty requirements. Permission to use AI does not automatically authorize use of an unapproved service or the disclosure of Protected Information.
Verify AI-generated output
AI-generated responses can be incomplete, inaccurate, outdated, fabricated, or biased. Check important claims against reliable sources. Review calculations, citations, quotations, code, accessibility, and factual statements before relying on or sharing the result.
Maintain human oversight
Treat AI output as assistance, not as an accountable decision-maker. A qualified person must review the work, apply appropriate professional judgment, and remain responsible for decisions and actions.
When to request review
Request ITS review before purchasing or adopting another AI service, connecting an AI service to university systems, or using Protected Information with an AI service.
