How do I manage my Google contacts?

Google contacts can be managed on contacts.google.com


Contacts - These are individuals you manually add with the +Create contact button in the upper left hand side of the page.

Directory - These are all active Plattsburgh email addresses, you are not able to modify this list.

Frequent - Any addresses you have emailed or been emailed by multiple times.

Other contacts - Any time you email an address or have been emailed by an address, it will be added to this list.

Merge & fix - Any duplicate entries will be listed here, you will be given the option to merge the duplicate entries.

Import - Import a list of contacts from a CSV or a vCard file.

Trash - Any contacts you have delete in the past 30 days, after 30 days the contact is permanently deleted.

Labels - Lists of contacts to make emailing groups easier.


Update a contact

  • Locate the contact in one of the contact lists
  • Mouse over the contact and click the edit contact pencil icon
  • Change any required fields
  • Click 'Save' 

Delete a contact

  • Locate the contact in one of the contact lists
  • Mouse over the contact and click the three vertical dots.
  • Click the 'Delete' option
  • Click 'Move to trash'
  • Items will remain in the trash for 30 days unless the trash is emptied in advance.
  • Items can be recovered while they are in the trash by clicking 'Recover', mouse over the contact to view the option. 

Using labels

  • Labels can be entered into the 'To' filed when composing a new email. Selecting the label in the 'To' field will automatically add all contacts that are a member of that particular label.
  • Create a new label by clicking the large + next to 'labels' along the left hand side of the contacts screen.
  • To add or remove a contact to/from a label:
    • Locate the contact in one of the lists
    • Mouse over the contact and click the three vertical dots that appear to the right of the contact
    • In the menu that opens click the label you wish to add or remove. Any labels the contact is a member of will have a check mark next to the label.
