Self-service Duo backup codes are restricted to a small, approved group of accounts. Membership is managed by ITS; this is not a general campus sign-in option. The service will eventually be retired, but no retirement date is currently specified.
Current service status: Self-service backup-code generation is available only to eligible accounts approved by ITS. Eligible users who need assistance should contact ITS.
Plan an alternative before you need it
Use Manage your Duo access to review your methods and add another available device or passkey while you can still authenticate. See Duo Mobile enrollment or switch from text-message passcodes to Duo Mobile.
If you cannot sign in
Select Other options at the Duo prompt and use another enrolled method if available. If none works, contact ITS. Staff must verify your identity before providing an approved recovery method. A temporary bypass code may be issued by authorized staff where policy permits; it is not guaranteed to work for device management.
For eligible self-service users
Eligible users can access Manage your Duo access and choose Backup codes for eligible accounts. You must complete the required authentication and pass the eligibility check. Do not wait until you have lost all working verification methods.
The updated self-service utility generates five one-use codes that expire after 14 days. Generating a new set invalidates existing bypass codes. Store them securely and follow the confirmation shown before generating them.
About staff-issued bypass codes
Codes are sensitive credentials. Their expiration and permitted number of uses depend on how they were issued. Follow the instructions ITS provides and do not assume an older code remains valid. Never share a code with an unsolicited caller or send it in response to an unexpected message.
Contact ITS for current eligibility and recovery options.
